Assistant Professor: 1,869 out of 2,837 sanctioned posts in state universities, one more year to wait

Assistant Professor Recruitment

Assistant Professor Recruitment: Shortage of faculty posts in Telangana state universities may continue in the coming academic year as no decision has been taken yet on recruitment.   There are 2,837 sanctioned posts in 11 state universities, of which 1,869 are vacant.   Out of these vacant posts, 238 are professors, 781 associate professors and 850 assistant professors.

In 2022, the state government introduced the Telangana State University Common Recruitment Board Bill.   According to the bill, the board was to be headed by the chairman of the Telangana State Council of Higher Education.   However, the bill was stuck as the governor did not get his assent.

Officials were reportedly instructed to withdraw the bill after the formation of the new government.   But TSCHE officials said they have not received any such instructions.   An official said, “This is a policy decision.   The universities have not received any mandate from the government.”

OU Teachers Association (OUTA) President B Manohar said, “In Osmania University, 350 vacancies have been filled out of 1,258 sanctioned posts.  But there are still many vacancies.  Be it funding, research proposals or quality of research, every aspect is affected due to lack of regular faculty.”

Telangana All University Teachers Association president G Malesham said, “The condition of all state universities is bad.   No appointments have been made since the formation of Telangana.   Six universities - Satavahana University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Palamuru University, Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, Dr. BR Ambedkar Open University, and Potti Sriramulu University - do not even have a single professor.   The number of vacant posts has increased in the last three years.”   Mallesham adds, “None of the VCs or executives are interested in solving this problem.
